GAIL and Karnataka Government Forge ₹5,000 Crore Partnership for 1 GW Renewable Energy Projects

In a significant move towards bolstering India's renewable energy landscape, GAIL (India) Limited has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Karnataka to develop 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable energy projects across the state. The agreement, signed on May 9, 2025, in Bengaluru, outlines a proposed investment of ₹5,000 crore over the next five years.

Diversified Renewable Energy Portfolio

Under this MoU, GAIL plans to establish a diversified portfol

io of renewable energy projects, including:

  • Ground-mounted solar installations
  • Rooftop solar systems
  • Floating solar projects
  • Wind energy farms
  • Integrated energy storage solutions

This initiative aligns with GAIL's broader objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions from its operations by 2035. The company aims to leverage Karnataka's favorable policy environment, skilled workforce, and available land resources to expedite the implementation of these projects.

Government Support and Facilitation

The Karnataka government has committed to facilitating the necessary approvals, registrations, and incentives required for the swift execution of these projects. Land acquisition will be streamlined through mechanisms such as leasing from farmers or allocation via the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB).

State Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, M.B. Patil, emphasized the state's readiness to support clean energy investments, stating, “We welcome GAIL's strategic interest in Karnataka. This MoU reaffirms our commitment to facilitating clean energy investments while driving industrial growth.”

Strengthening Karnataka's Green Energy Hub Status

Energy Minister K.J. George highlighted the significance of this partnership in reinforcing Karnataka's position as a green energy hub. He noted that the collaboration would contribute to employment generation, infrastructure development, and the state's climate goals.

The state already hosts the Pavagada Solar Park, which generates 2,050 MW annually. Local farmers have expressed willingness to provide an additional 10,000 acres for similar renewable energy projects, further enhancing Karnataka's capacity for clean energy production.

Conclusion

This strategic alliance between GAIL and the Karnataka government marks a pivotal step in India's transition towards sustainable energy. By investing in a diversified range of renewable energy projects, the partnership aims to meet the growing energy demands while contributing to environmental conservation and economic development.
